Nerve Graft
A nerve graft is employed as a procedurewhen it isn’t possible to sew two ends of a damaged nerve back together. So, either a nerve is grafted from a different part of the body or a small piece of donor nerve fills the gap between the nerve ends. The grafted nerve then regenerates and fills the gap.A nerve graft can effectively treat complex injuries to peripheral nerves, especially the ones associated with injuries, dislocations and fractures.
- Procedure
During a nerve graft a surgeon takes a healthy piece of an expendable nerve from a part of the body and uses it to reconnect two ends of a damaged nerve. The recovery happens whena nerve tissue regenerates from either end of an original nerve and connectstothe grafted nerve tissue.
Hospital Stay and Expenses
Not muchof a hospital stay is expected. Most nerve graft procedures are done on an outpatient basis (patient is relieved on the same day) and can cost around 4200 USD. It is merely a fraction of the cost for the same procedure done in western countries and other medical tourism hubs across the globe.
